what happens when. . .

This is what happens when the kids go out to play and Mom stays inside

Isaac eats sidewalk chalk.

Nora decides to water the garden and misses, creating a lovely mud puddle that Isaac really appreciates.

Isaac's pants get really dirty.

Nothing like a little freedom.

Di and Em

I realize, that lately, this blog has turned into a shrine for Isaac with an occasional mention of Nora. I was warned I would fall for my son, and I did, besides, babies are so much more fun to photograph.

Rest assured, Emily and Diana get lots of attention, love, time, books, kisses, tickles, food, hair doing, movies, dress-ups, etc. I just don;'t take a lot of pictures of them, and hence I don't write about them.

So, here is the Di and Em update.

Diana:
Kindergarten continues to be "great". She was the only child to have her father join the parent teacher conference via speaker phone. Ryan is serious about education (I know, I know, what is Ryan NOT serious about). She is learning how to read and it is so fun to see her figuring it all out. She loves to color, write the words she knows, play, play, play with sisters and smother Isaac (I'm not the only on in love). Diana loves to talk to Grandma and Grandpa on the phone, as well as Aunt Jessica. She has an incredible memory which sometimes gets me in trouble. She has a lot of faith and has a whole list of people she prays for EVERY time, plus asking that countries will open their doors for missionaries like Pres. Monson asked us to do. So there you have it - Diana.

Emily:
Em thrives on one on one time - it makes her sparkle. She and I get some almost every day when the little ones are napping and Diana is at school. We read, snuggle, play games, collect kisses etc. That said, she is also the world's nicest kid because sometimes Mommy really, really wants/needs a nap during special time and she will sweetly play quietly and let me sleep. WHAT A KID! Emmy loves playing with sisters, friends, and totally strangers - like Aunt Di, she likes to PLAY! Emily is picking up lots of what Diana brings home from school - she is pretty quick, it's fun. Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you Emmy.

this and that and tortilla soup

On Saturday we went to a birthday party - so MUCH F.U.N. Poor Nora was really tuckered afterwards.

Six radish seeds have sprouted - success!

Diana made this tortilla soup (with a little help from Mom and Nora) and it was scrumptious.
4 chicken breasts,cubed
1 onion, chopped
3 garlic cloves, minced
Saute in a bit of hot olive oil
Move to a stock pot or crock pot and add:
28 once can diced tomatoes
4 oz can minced green chilis
2 cups frozen corn
6 chicken bullion cubes
4 beef bullion cubes
1/4 tsp chili powder
2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp pepper
1 tsp cumin
6 cups water
Simmer on stove for 1 hour or in crock pot on low all day long.

Take 15 white corn tortillas, cut into 1/4 inch strips, place on cookie sheet and bake in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes.

Serve soup over tortilla strips and add sour cream, cheese, avocados, lime juice etc.

Isaac REALLY loves to be outside and because the winter grass isn't in yet it is a mess, but he loves it none the less.

He also loves Ryan's lunchbox.

anyone?

Hey, is anyone out there in Mesa land going to the nienie concert on Saturday? I would like to go, but don't want to go alone and I don't think Ryan would enjoy, so he gets to baby-sit.

handsome

You cannot even begin to imagine how many kisses this face needs every day. Also, Mom personally witnessed 4 very balanced steps today, very manly, very handsome.

crazy apron

I have never been very good at the shabby chic, mix and match fabric thing, but hey - should that stop one from trying? Anyway, it's for a 2 year old, she won't care, and her mom is the world's nicest human, so she won't care either. Isn't Emmy a lovely model?

reminds me of Unlce Stephen

Emily and Nora spilled bubble juice all over the patio and Isaac crawled right through it, getting all slimy, so we sprayed it all off and then let him play with the hose for a bit (don't worry, it was in the 90's today). These pictures remind me of ones my mom took of Stephen when he was about this age doing the same thing.

dirt

We had an FHE lesson on faith on Monday (the whole seed analogy) and so the girls and I planted our winter garden to see seeds in action. Ah dirt.

land of enchantment

We had a great trek out to New Mexico to visit Cort and Corey from MIT days and Cousins Joyce and Joseph. Corey and I talked and talked and talked some more. We also squeezed in some balloon watching. Cort was a delight and their kids so fun. It was hilarious hearing Emily try and try to get Elliot (age 5) interested in a princess conversation - he was a good sport but would have none of it. Ethan (age 8) went into hiding, understandably, and Claire (almost 2) was precious and funny.

On Friday we drove up to the strange and wonderful Los Alamos, the town created in the 40's for the Manhattan Project. Note: to find Joyce and Joseph's, look for the only house with a pretty front yard (what is it about PhD's not doing yard work). Joseph's yard is beautiful and a site to behold.

Joyce, although great with child, had planned a lovely day - lunch at the park, a movie, decorating cupcakes, playing with toys, dinner - ahhh. We even managed to get Isaac a nap surrounded by pillows on the spare room bed. I'm sure we totally wore her out, but it was so nice to visit and see her and see their house and hear all about baby plans. I like visiting friends because then I can envision their surroundings when I think of them.

Ryan and Joseph went to the museum downtown and learned all about nuclear everything and the town etc - a manly thing to do and helpful to Ryan who does not hang out and visit well.

All in all it was a lovely trip, but we did learn Isaac DOES NOT like his chair. He cried for about 4 hours hours on the way over, and was just as bad on the way home. I just can't wait for the Christmas trek to CA and the February trip to Utah for Aunt Mel's show. Hopefully he is over it by then and resigned to his fate.

conference, pumpkins and wicked strong

Wasn't conference GREAT? My favorite was the girls singing along to the primary choir on Saturday afternoon - loved it.

The girls did a beautiful job painting their pumpkins, lovely.

Ryan bought some rock climbing things to hang from the back porch and we are all now going to get wicked strong. Also photographic proof that Ryan does know how to smile.

Saturday evening we had a picnic in the family room, ate pizza and watched Pooh. It was great.

To top it all off, Saturday and Sunday topped out in the 80's - wow, so much better than the 90's.

It's now Monday morning and the girls are in the family room in their swimming suit (aka their SUPER SUITS) listening to Suessical and dancing. Diana just assigned parts: she is Gertrude, Emily is Maisy, and poor Nora gets to be the Sour Kangaroo. They are nuts. Oh, and Isaac is napping (I hope) I have put him down three times this morning and it's finally quiet up there. He is figuring out the walking thing and it is very precious, but I guess not very exhausting since a nap was not on his agenda this morning.

welcome to OCTOBER!

First off, Nora pumpkin head would like to welcome you to October.

Secondly, we busted out the Halloween Decor and were especially pleased with our "spooky trees". We had a lot of fun hunting branches and spray painting them. I'm sure pre-school and kindergarten will help our Halloween art collection grow over the next few weeks as well. Feeling very spooky here (even though it was 100 degrees here yesterday - arrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg!).
Finally, something for the goofy art niche.

We love the 6 ghosts we made with the cub scouts 3 years ago.

Diana saw a spider yesterday on the walk home from the bus and I asked her if we should bring it home for one of our spooky trees. She said, "NO!", so we had to stick with the plastic ones.

picking rock

Ryan re-lived summers on Grandpa Nelson's farm on Saturday as he assigned the girls to pick rock out of the dead backyard in hopes that one day it will cool off and we can plant winter grass - the only kind we seem able to grow here. I guess Ryan and the cousins picked a new crop of rock every summer from Grandpa's fields. Semi-fond memories.
